Release of the Campbell Review of

Military Compensation Arrangements

The Coalition welcomes the release of the Campbell Review into Military Compensation Arrangements.

Shadow Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Senator the Hon. Michael Ronaldson, said the 544-page report will have long-term consequences for veterans and their families.

“This Review, 12 months late in delivery, will now be thoroughly scrutinised by the veteran and ex-service community, families of veterans and serving and ex-service people alike”, Senator Ronaldson said.

“Prior to the last election the Coalition committed to extensive consultation on the Review’s findings.  The Coalition intends to honour this commitment.

“Over the coming months I will meet with representatives of the veteran and ex-service community to discuss the recommendations and hear their concerns.”

Senator Ronaldson said he encouraged community members with concerns about recommendations to make contact with the Review’s steering committee.

“As requested by me at Senate Estimates in October last year, the Government has announced a formal consultation process.  I encourage the community to be actively engaged in this process and make their views known to the Government ahead of the 30 June 2011 deadline.”

“The Coalition thanks and congratulates Department Secretary, Ian Campbell PSM, and the Review Steering Committee for the enormous amount of work that has been put into the preparation of this report.”

“It is, of course, a report which bears Mr Campbell’s name and the final outcome will be the yardstick for determining military compensation for the years to come.”

“Mr Campbell’s name joins those of Clarke, Tanzer, Mohr, Baume and Toose as an author of a significant body of work on veterans’ entitlements and Australia’s repatriation system.”

“While I am sure there will be heated debate about some matters in the report, it is important that an acceptable final outcome is reached at the end of the consultation process”, Senator Ronaldson said.
